Let me enlighten many of you as a cancer MD who has been in this field for 50 years. Bias and ego, along with greed, dominate my profession. In fact, my favorite quote is that the oldest profession has become the oldest profession.
Clinical research is funded by the drug companies 95% of the time. The physicians are paid for each patient enrolled. Physicians are invited to be part of speaker panels that tour the globe espousing the particular drug or device. All of this is paid for, of course. The journals are full of advertisements for drugs, along with the continued bombardment of TV ads for various drugs for the sick and ailing American public. That is without a doubt a form of brain washing --but that's the state of the world in the USA today. I cannot stop the flood of medical tabloids that are replete with advertisements.
The FDA panels that approve or reject drugs and/or devices are manned by individuals often on the payroll of the very same drug company seeking approval. From what I have experienced, there is huge bias in the way decisions are made by that panel. Due diligence is often not done by the panel since it is a part time job. Those on the panel are not asked to recuse themselves if there is a conflict of interest. In fact, nowadays the medical journals require you to state any conflicts of interest, including investments or payments related to the article you have published. If you "confess" the conflicts, then all is considered acceptable. The fact that Dr. ABC has stock in Glaxo, or is on the Speaker's Bureau for Aventis is only important in the declaration of the conflict. This is the closest thing to a confessional that I know--just admit your conflict of interest and all is OK.
How to find an honest man or woman. This is truly an odyssey of a biblical nature. But this pervades all of our culture and it is global in nature. We seem to not be able to get close to the truth. Our world is full of amazing technological advances, yet the basic issues of morality and ethics seem to disappear as the greed/ego aspects of our lives gather more "moss" due to the growing religion of consumerism. It's the Al Franken generation of Saturday Nite Live i.e., What's in it for me?

医学雑誌も広告だらけだ。
薬を認可するFDAの委員会には、
当該製薬会社と金銭関係のある人物が入っていることが多いし、
私の経験からしても、そんな委員会にバイアスがないわけがない。
ディスクロージャーが義務付けられたといっても
金銭関係を「告白」すれば、それが免罪符になって終わり。
一体どこに正直な人間がいるのか、真実が一体どこにあるのか、
もはやほとんど宗教的な次元の話だ。
これが米国の文化であり、グローバルに広がっていくだろう。
素晴らしいテクノロジーの発達の一方で、道徳心や倫理感は消え失せて
消費主義という宗教のもと、金銭欲とエゴばかりがはびこっていく。
